The Pilgrims have been imperious on their own patch over the past few years

Hull City will be frustrated with their start to the season under new boss Tim Walter, and the recent past suggests they may have to wait even longer for a win under their new boss.

The Tigers secured a 1-1 draw with Bristol City on the opening day of the Championship campaign, before going down 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

If you include the end of the previous campaign, City have won just three of their last 15 matches in all competitions, in a run that stretches back into February, and ultimately saw them miss out on a Championship playoff spot last term.

The Humberside outfit travel to Plymouth Argyle for this weekend looking to get three points under their belt, but despite Wayne Rooney’s side going down 4-0 to Wednesday themselves last weekend, Home Park is always a place to fear at this time of year.

Plymouth Argyle’s opening home game record

In fact, Argyle have won every single one of their opening home games of the season since the 2018/19 campaign, and haven’t tasted defeat in the first showing in front of their own fans since the 2016/17 campaign.

The mood may have been soured at Home Park of late with their torrid start to the season, but the atmosphere is sure to be electric in Devon on Saturday, as the Pilgrims look to put their poor first 90 minutes of the season behind them.

City will know full well how intimidating that can be, having fallen to a 1-0 defeat at the Theatre of Greens on the final day of the previous campaign, which ultimately saw the hosts maintain their Championship status.

Indeed, now non-league outfit Southend United were the last time to stop Argyle picking up all three points in the first league match at Home Park in the season, as the Shrimpers returned to Essex with a 1-1 draw back in 2018.

Since then, Antoni Sarcevic has secured a 1-0 win over Colchester United in League Two, while Luke Jephcott scored the only goal of the game in a win over Blackpool in the tier above.

The same player helped defeat Gillingham in the 2021/22 campaign, before Finn Azaz struck to see off Barnsley at the beginning of their victorious League One campaign two seasons back.

The Greens’ return to the Championship was marked by a 3-1 victory over Huddersfield Town last time out, and Rooney will be hoping that imperious record in front of their own fans continues this weekend.

Hull City still searching for success under Tim Walter

Tigers fans will be hoping their side can start to pick up momentum this season, after owner Acun Ilicali made the decision to axe boss Liam Rosenior just days after the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign.

City had finished just a place outside of the top six in the second tier, but the Turkish entrepreneur was keen to see a change of style at the club, hence the move for Walter in the summer.

But things are yet to fully click into gear for the Humberside outfit, with a late Oscar Estupinan penalty the only saving grace from the opening day draw with Bristol City at the MKM Stadium.

With just four changes to the side for the clash with the Owls on Tuesday, Walter would have expected a reaction from his side, with the visitors changing the entirety of the starting XI from the weekend.

But another defeat in front of their own fans followed, with Charlie McNeil bagging a brace to send them out of the cup competition in the first round.

One thing to cling on to heading into the weekend will be their away record from the previous campaign, with eleven victories on the road seeing them register more points away from the MKM Stadium than they did playing in front of their own fans.

If that is to continue, the Tigers may stand a chance of picking up something from Home Park this weekend, but Argyle will be looking to maintain their flawless run into a seventh season.
