Chelsea’s highest scoring game this season in terms of xG was their away game against West Ham, according to the stats on FBRef.
Mauricio Pochettino’s team managed 2.5 expected goals, the 5th highest of any away team all season so far. West Ham managed just 1.8. Yet the Hammers finished the game with 3 goals, and Chelsea just one.
It’s the same story at home, where our highest xG was 2.2 (the 12th highest of any home team in any game so far this season). Yet we scored 0 goals from that, and Nottingham Forest scored one from their 0.8.
That means that we have 0 points from our two highest scoring xG games of the season. The team is getting the ball into the box in dangerous moments, it’s just not putting it in the net, and even just a few games into the season, that’s costing us dearly.
The positive spin is that a few breaks our way should see back on track before too long.
