Borussia Dortmund’s defence of their DFB Pokal crown came to a surprise end at the hands of 2. Bundesliga leaders St Pauli at the Millerntor-Stadion on Tuesday night.

Scorers: Amenyido 4, Witsel OG 40′; Haaland pen 58′

Etienne Amenyido gave the Hamburg outfit a shock lead with just four minutes on the clock as he bundled in from close range after a bundle of BVB bodies failed to deal with the danger on the right hand side.

An almost full strength Dortmund were expected to rally but fell further behind shortly before half-time as a cross from the right again caused problems and this time Gregor Kobel was beaten by his own player as Axel Witsel turned into his own net.

The rally from the visitors did eventually arrive after the break and they halved the deficit from the penalty spot through Erling Haaland after a VAR-checked handball in the area.

However, they couldn’t find a way to equalise as the competition favourites and holders exit at the last 16 stage, while St Pauli are into the quarter-finals for the first time since 2006.
