Spezia have been promoted to Serie A for the first time in the club’s history after play-off success on Thursday night.
However, they had to rely on the league’s utterly bizarre rules for the play-off picture to squeeze past Alessandro Nesta’s Frosinone.
After a 1-0 win in the first leg, the Aquilotti were actually beaten by the same scoreline at home tonight.
However, due to their higher league position (third in comparison with Frosinone’s eighth), they gain promotion with the scores level after 180 minutes.
It is the first time in their 114-year history that the Ligurians, who were refounded recently, will compete in Italy’s top tier.
Coached by Vincenzo Italiano, among their recognisable names in the current squad are Simone Scuffet (on loan from Udinese) and former Roma duo Federico and Matteo Ricci.
