History made as away wins rule on Matchday 24

There were eight away victories across a single matchday for just the second time ever in Bundesliga history, as home sides failed to win at all for just the 10th time ever.

Playing at home is meant to offer a significant advantage but that was not the case on Matchday 24, with eight of the nine games ending in victory for the visiting side.

Bayern Munich came from behind to defeat VfB Stuttgart 3-1 at the MHP Arena to kick off the weekend's action on Friday night, a result that was hardly a shock considering the Bavarians are top of the table.

On Saturday afternoon, though, all five of the home sides were beaten, including RB Leipzig, who suffered a potentially crucial loss against fellow UEFA Champions League contenders Mainz, surrending a lead after scoring inside 60 seconds before losing 2-1.

There were also triumphs for Borussia Mönchengladbach, Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg, who defeated Heidenheim, Bochum and Werder Bremen respectively on their travels, while Borussia Dortmund had too much for St. Pauli at the Millerntor in a 2-0 win.To round off Saturday's play, reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen strolled past Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 at Deutsche Bank Park to reduce the deficit to league-leaders Bayern to eight points.

In terms of historical context, only twice before in Bundesliga history had their been seven away winners. The first occasion was on Matchday 2 of the 2010/11 campaign; that was followed by Matchday 18 in 2018/19.

Holstein Kiel continued the weekend's trend on Sunday, with Armin Gigović's strike enough for a 1-0 victory at Union Berlin. Only once before in Bundesliga history has there been eight away wins: Matchday 6 of the 2019/20 campaign has that particular honour.

There has never been a time when all nine games have been won by the away teams, with Freiburg missing the chance to make it a full house on Matchday 24 in their 0-0 draw at Augsburg to round out the weekend.

Still, that result contributed to another historic landmark, making it just the 10th matchday in Bundesliga history in which no home side won. The most recent occasion prior to this was on Matchday 8 of the 2020/21 campaign, where there were five away wins and four draws.
