This week, in Historic Goals, Paco Gento is in the spotlight. The winger signed for Real Madrid in the summer of 1953 from Racing Santander, going on to make history with our club for 18 seasons. Nicknamed La Galerna del Cantábrico due to his speed and strength, he was noted for his dribbling and crossing. He was also part of a legendary forward line which included Di Stéfano, Puskas, Rial and Kopa.

Real Madrid visited Barcelona at the Camp Nou in the 1960/61 season on LaLiga matchday 12. Gento was the star of the show, bagging a brace. In the goal we will look back on, he received in space out on the left wing, took on his opposite number inside the box and, after cutting inside, unleashed a fierce right-footed shot that went in off the crossbar. Real Madrid went on to win the game 3-5. Gento made 600 appearances in 18 seasons at Real Madrid, scorong 182 goals. He is currently the club's honorary president and the player with the most European Cups wins with six. His impressive trophy haul also includes 12 LaLiga titles, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 2 Spanish Cups, 2 Latin Cups and 1 Small Club World Cup.
