After their takeover earlier in the year, Shota Arveladze was well supported in his summer recruitment at Hull City and based on the signings the club made, the Tigers were hoping for a season more successful than their 19th place finish last year.

However, the club currently sit 20th in the table having lost half of their opening ten games so far this season with four losses in a row now.

Hull lost 3-0 against a struggling Swansea last weekend conceding all three goals in the second half and as a result, it’s no surprise that Arveladze’s future is being discussed.

As it stands, Chairman Acun Ilicali seems to be backing the boss even further but as they prepare for a Friday night game against Luton Town next Friday, results have to start changing.

Former Tigers striker Aaron McLean feels this is a turnaround that has to start with Arveladze himself as he told Sky Sports (via Hull Live): “If you were watching that [his interview after Swansea] as a Hull fan, I don’t think you could take too much confidence from it. He sounds really defeated at the moment, and, for me, I’m looking for my manager and I’m thinking right I need you to give me something, give me something to hold on to, give me some kind of belief.

“His confidence looks on the floor and I think that’s translating into the players at the moment, as well. It wasn’t a good interview.”

Whilst critical of the manager though, McLean although feels the responsibility falls on the shoulders of the players too as he said: “There are certain fundamentals within the game, irrespective of what formation you play, being able to go and press the ball, not being passive and letting the game pass you by. It doesn’t matter what the system is. It’s down to the players to actually want to go and impose themselves on the opposition.

“I didn’t see that. The game finished 3-0 and, yes, you’d say a couple of the goals were mistakes but this game could have been six or seven, make no mistake about it. Swansea missed opportunities that they’d fancy themselves to score on another day.

“At 3-0, they [Hull] should almost be happy that it was only 3-0. This game could have gotten away from them within the first six minutes.”

What season did the club make the Football League Trophy final?

1981/82 1982/83 1983/84 1984/85

The Verdict:

Although Ilicali is sticking beside Shota Arveladze for now, when you look at their current form you can imagine the manager’s days are numbered after the international break if form doesn’t improve.

When teams are in tough positions, they often look to their manager for guidance so when you look at Arveladze who is clearly lacking confidence, it does make you concerned about how he plans to lift the spirits in the dressing room.

The blame doesn’t fall solely on the manager as the former City striker says, however, if something isn’t working then he will be the cog that changes as Hull look for improvement.

Coming from a player’s perspective, the fact he sees worrying signs in the manager currently could suggest things are only going in one direction currently.
