Rangers secured a gigantic 3 points today against a St Mirren who started, frankly, magnificently, but simply did not have the energy to sustain it, as the visitors capitalised ruthlessly.

Ibrox Noise brings you our ratings for a fine afternoon ultimately in Paisley:

OneFootball Videos

McLaughlin:

Beaten all ends up for the goal, but claimed well enough. Wasn’t really called upon to do much aside that. 6

Tavernier:

A second assist in two games tells you Tavernier is getting some attacking form back, with some excellent crossing throughout. Unfortunately his dreadful short pass to Lundstram exposed the midfielder who couldn’t get close to Ronan, demonstrating that Tav will always make silly little mistakes that can and do lead to goals. 7

Goldson:

A couple of wasted headers on goal when he should have done better, but his clearances were solid and overall he did what was needed of him. 6

Balogun:

Was clearly carrying his injury and didn’t look as mobile. Managed to clear his lines well enough but was not as powerful and strong as he has been. 6

Barisic:

His best for a while, albeit this wasn’t saying much, he was marginally improved and managed to get in quite a few crosses unlike his horror show v Brondby. Still can’t help feeling he’s the inferior choice to Bassey right now. 6

Davis:

Oh this wasn’t good from Davo. As culpable for St Mirren’s goal as Tav and Lundstram were, with a bad misjudgement of flight then a poor choice of header not to mention a weak header at that to Tav, Davis is well off the boil and becoming a liability. His passing level has noticeably dipped, and we’re not blaming him for it. He’s just getting too old now. 5

Lundstram:

In selecting both Davo and Lundstram, Stevie once again hamstrung the ex-Utd man, who was less effective once again in the advanced slot than he’s been in the 6. Part of the mix up for the goal, but his game aside that was solid enough. He’s just not as good when Davo takes the 6 berth. 6

Aribo:

After his stellar show v the Danes, he was subdued in this one. Probably his least effective performance of the season – the attention and hype probably got to him. 5

Hagi:

Won a great penalty, a constant danger, and his passing level was sharp as a tack. He’ll be pleased with his afternoon’s work. 7

Roofe:

Maybe a little bit quieter but still dangerous, and his movement was a problem for the Buddies’ defence. Rarely lost the ball. Took the penalty brilliantly. 7

Morelos:

We’re not going to pretend – this was another poor show from him. His passing level was a literal disgrace at 56% BUT he got his 100th goal and we really hope he can take his form up a level after this. Yellow card was lame, but you can’t celebrate that way, unfortunately. 6

Notable Subs:

Sakala:

Stevie could see Morelos on a yellow card and hooked him off, but the Zambian replacement struggled. A horror miss from a pretty glaring header, and he’s still not quite reading the game right. We hope he’ll get there soon. 5

Manager:

Gerrard decided to give McGregor a rest, and dumped Wright and Simpson entirely (more on all that later) and for the first 30 minutes must have thought Juventus were undercover. Rangers were second best to everything and St Mirren were outstanding. But their level dipped, Rangers got a penalty and a second goal and suddenly it was the visitors’ to lose. The manager has to seriously consider some of his selections now, because while we got the mammoth win, there are a fair chunk of players not delivering and many on the bench who can. But the workrate WAS there from one and all, so the manager will be happy with that. 7
