Former England midfielder Carlton Palmer believes Norwich City striker Josh Sargent will be sold by the club if they fail to get promoted to the Premier League this season.

The Canaries are currently in a race to secure a play-off spot, and Sargent has played a key role in the club being able to do that.

The USA international has had his injury worries this season, but when he has been fit and available, he has been in sensational form for the Canaries.

Sargent has scored 14 goals in 21 league appearances this season, with his last three goals coming in consecutive wins over Rotherham United, Stoke City, and Plymouth Argyle.

That scoring form has caught the attention of Premier League teams, with Wolves and Brentford being two sides that have been credited with interest in the 24-year-old in recent weeks.

So, Sargent’s future at Carrow Road could come down to what the club achieves this season.

Carlton Palmer thinks Josh Sargent will be sold by Norwich City if they fail to get promoted

Here we asked former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer for his thoughts on whether Norwich City will be able to keep hold of striker Josh Sargent this summer after an impressive 2023/24 campaign.

Palmer exclusively told Football League World: “Norwich City face a summer of uncertainty about their star striker, Josh Sargent.

“Josh is still only 24 and has been hugely impressive this season for Norwich City, scoring 14 goals in 21 appearances.

“Norwich City sit in the final play-off place on 67 points, Coventry City sit just outside the play-off place and have a game in hand on Norwich, but they are four points behind Norwich City.

“So, Norwich will hope they can get in the play-offs and hopefully fire themselves into the Premier League. As I said, I think that is going to be very difficult, given that one of the three, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, or Leeds United, will be in the play-offs with the likes of Southampton and West Bromwich Albion, who have had fantastic seasons.

“So, it is really something that Norwich City will be concerned about, but obviously they will look at this. They are not blessed with loads and loads of funds, but with four wins in their last five games, they will be looking to push on and get promotion.

“If they were to get promotion, then I think Josh Sargent’s future would be assured, but if they didn’t get promotion, I think it is highly likely that Sargent will be sold to raise money to build the squad, so they can go one better the following season and to get into the automatic spots.

“It is getting more and more difficult now with sides who are relegated from the Premier League. Teams who get relegated from the Premier League have rich pickings and so, therefore, the sides that do get relegated are always going to be in the running of getting promoted the following season.

“But Norwich will be hoping they may be able to convince Josh Sargent to stay one more season or, if he is sold for a big fee, they could possibly get him back for a season loan.”

After 41 games, the Championship season is now entering the most important part of the season as teams look to get promoted or look to beat the drop.

In Norwich’s case, the Canaries are continuing in their pursuit of promotion as they look to seal a place in this season’s play-offs.

David Wagner’s side has had a turbulent campaign, but they currently occupy the final play-off spot, with their 1-0 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday strengthening their chances.

The Canaries remain in sixth place with 67 points, four clear of seventh place Coventry City, but the Sky Blues do have a game in hand.

However, Norwich will have fifth spot in their sights, as they are now just two points behind West Brom, as the Baggies have drawn their last three games.

Wagner’s side are back in action this midweek as they travel to Yorkshire to face Sheffield Wednesday.

Josh Sargent will only remain at Norwich if they seal promotion

Norwich will not be thinking about players’ futures as of yet, as the club will be focusing on finishing the league season in the best possible way.

But, as whenever Championship teams have excellent players on their books, the likelihood of them remaining at the club hinges on whether they get to the Premier League.

Josh Sargent’s situation isn’t much different, as he will likely stay at Carrow Road should they be promoted to the top flight, as he will want to prove the doubters wrong. If it isn’t secured, teams from England and abroad may see it as a chance to secure his signature for a low-priced deal.
