It’s been quite the eventful year for Edson Álvarez following his €15m move from América to Ajax.

A lot was expected of the versatile Mexico international, and he has certainly shown enough promise to suggest it was money well spent by the Dutch giants.

Álvarez inked the deal on 19 July, 2019, and then hit the ground running for Erik ten Hag’s men.

In September, the 22-year-old became the first Mexican to score on his Champions League debut when he notched his side’s second goal in their 3–0 group stage win over Lille.

They would eventually be pipped by Chelsea and Valencia to the top two spots in Group H.

And there would be further disappointment in the KNVB Cup semi-final when Utrecht pulled off a shock 2-0 upset.

To cap it off, the Covid-19 pandemic would lead to the cancellation of the Eredivisie when Ajax were well-placed to retain the title.

But while it may not have been the dream debut season for Álvarez, he has settled in well at the Johan Cruyff Arena and will be hoping for many more memorable moments to come.
