A 0-0 draw against leaders Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga two weeks ago may have effectively ended the title hopes of Bayer Leverkusen, but the defending champions aren’t necessarily through with the German Rekordmeister just yet. Having already tossed Bayern out of the German cup, Xabi Alonso’s Werkself will receive a chance to deliver another puch at Bayern in the Champions League in four days time.

A massive win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Saturday evening Topspiel left Germany’s red company team brimming with confidence. It remains the case that Alonso has never lost against Bayern in six meetings. Moreover, the Basque head coach always seems to have the right tactical answers when it comes time to lock horns with the German giants.

That doesn’t matter,” Xabi nevertheless said when asked about his record against Bayern at the post-match press conference, “[Wednesday night at the Allianz Arena] will be brutally difficult for us; a big challenge.

Xabi seemed a little more confident when speaking to the Sky Germany sports desk prior to the presser. So too did midfield talisman Granit Xhaka when it was his turn to stop in with the famous Topspiel roundtable.

We’re in a good place,” Xabi told Sky. “We want to show again that we can fight against Bayern.”

That was a command performance,” Xhaka said of the match just completed, then quickly adding:  “I think we’re stable enough to aggravate Bayern.
