Hibernian defender Ryan Porteous is close to joining Watford for around £400,000, according to Sky Sports.

Hibs will also receive a sell-on percentage if Watford sell the player and the two clubs will play each other in a friendly at Easter Road on a future date.

The Scottish club tried to get the centre-back to sign a new contract, with his current deal ending in June. He rejected the offer and has chosen to move.

Porteous will become Watford’s third signing of the transfer window. The Hornets have already signed Joao Ferreira and Henrique Araujo from Portuguese giants Benfica.

Despite the interest of several other Championship clubs, Hibernian owner Ron Gordon accepted Watford’s bid for the player.

Porteous will now have his medical with Watford, but it is unclear if his signing will happen early enough for him to participate in their clash against Middlesbrough this Saturday.

He will replace William Troost-Ekong, who left the club to join Salernitana on loan in Serie A. The Italian club have an option to buy clause in the deal.

Porteous has played 156 games for Hibs, scoring 13 goals in that time. This season, he has made 26 appearances, scoring three and assisting one.

The 23-year-old leaves Lee Johnson’s side sitting sixth in the Scottish Premiership. City rivals Hearts knocked them out of the Scottish Cup on Sunday.

Porteous is a Scotland international, making his debut and only appearance in September 2022 in a game against Ukraine. He joined their under-19 set-up before progressing to the senior team.
