The 29-year-old grew up in South Korea but made the move to Germany as a teenager before eventually making his way to the Premier League with Tottenham.
Son has now revealed he took inspiration from Manchester United cult-hero Ji-Sung Park, with the former winger described as a ‘national hero’ in South Korea.
“Manchester United,” he told Pro:Direct Soccer when quizzed on what his favourite team was growing up. “Because obviously, Ji-Sung (Park) was playing there, he’s a national hero. He was the first (South Korean) player to play in the Premier League.
“I was supporting United but obviously I can’t now.”
Ji-Sung Park, who spent seven years at Manchester United between 2005 and 2012, was nicknamed ‘Three-lung Park’ due to his neverending running, an understanding extended to the young fans in South Korea: “In Korea, they also say, like (he has) two hearts or whatever. He’s a national hero for me,” he added.
Son’s admission won’t come as a surprise to many – Manchester United remain one of the most globally recognised brands in the world and not least in Asia, with pre-season tours there still a regular occurrence.
