The stakes are very high for the Tottenham winger as he, along with his team-mates, will be forced to report for 21 months of national service in South Korea if they fail to retain their Asian Games title.

All Korean men have to report for duty before the age of 28 and Son has yet to do so. However, exemptions are given in rare occurrences, such as winning Olympic or Asian Games gold.

Spurs may be without Son until at least 2 September, the day after the Asian Games Final.

As part of his release terms, Son will skip South Korea’s friendly in November and the first two matches of the Asian Cup in January.
