Alan Hutton has urged Tottenham to give Heung-min Son “whatever he asks for” as talks take place over a new and improved contract.
The former Spurs and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the 28-year-old is vitally important for Jose Mourinho and that the club should do everything they can to tie him down.
As revealed by Football Insider, negotiations are progressing well between club chiefs and the South Korean star’s representatives and an agreement is expected before the end of the year.
It is understood that Son’s current terms are significantly lower than the likes of top earners Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele and that Spurs want to elevate him into that bracket.
Hutton believes Son has earned the right to be rewarded with a new big-money deal and even suggests that he is underrated by some onlookers.
Hutton told Football Insider: “Just give him what he wants, I mean that, whatever he asks for, just give him it. I think he’s sensational.
“He’s been that player that, even when Tottenham were struggling, he was the one that could really give you something. He’s got pace, he’s clever, he scores all types of goals, he’s got the whole package in my opinion.
“I even sometimes think he’s underrated when you talk about other players in the league – people talk about (Sadio) Mane and (Mo) Salah and all these kind of guys and he is way up there.
“That would be an absolute priority for Tottenham to tie him down, he is so key to what they do, him and Harry Kane have such a great partnership together, they link up so well going forward.
“Just give him what he wants, sign the deal, he’s coming into his prime. He’s not necessarily going to get better but he’s going to hold his standards for a long time so tie him down and get on with it.”
In other Tottenham news, the club are planning talks to rip up the contract of a senior star.
