Sam Gallagher’s 76th-minute strike proved to be the difference between two high-flyers as Blackburn Rovers secured a precious 1-0 home victory over Middlesbrough yesterday evening.

Boro were in scintillating form coming into this tie, going unbeaten in their last seven league matches and winning 19 points from a possible 21 during this remarkable run, putting them in contention to win a top-six spot at the end of the campaign.

And under the stewardship of Chris Wilder, this looked set to continue against a side that had two of their key starters in Ben Brereton Diaz and Joe Rothwell missing from their squad, as well as exciting forward Tyrhys Dolan.

However, Tony Mowbray’s young squad fought against the odds once again to keep things tight at the back and grab a late winner, with Gallagher’s swivel and shot into the bottom corner worthy of the three points the Lancashire outfit won.

This victory takes Rovers into the play-off spots after seeing AFC Bournemouth slip up numerous times recently – and although they suffered their own defeat in midweek against Hull City – they responded perfectly with this result.
