Former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi has spoken out on his experience learning under Pep Guardiola, as well as the emergence of Manchester City’s defensive dominance this season.
The Argentine defender spent five years at the Etihad Stadium, and was arguably a key member in helping Manchester City secure nine domestic trophies during that spell.
In an exclusive interview with The Athletic’s Jack Lang, the Benfica defender had this to say on spending his prime years with Pep Guardiola:
“A beast. There’s nothing better than having a coach like Pep. Honestly, I was lucky to spend those four years with him.”
He went on to speak about the resurgence of his former defensive partner John Stones, who has re-emerged as a regular starter in Pep Guardiola’s back line.
“I think he [John Stones] is a great player. He has enormous quality, as does Ruben Dias, they’ve adapted really well. John went through a spell when he had a lot of injuries. Perhaps when he did play, he didn’t have much confidence but he never [gave up]…”
“I saw him up close every day. On a personal level, he’s a great kid, open to learning, having a fantastic season. I always want the best for my former team-mates. It’s a humble and hard-working group. I hope they win as many titles as possible.”
Nicolas Otamendi now practices his trade at Portuguese outfit Benfica, however he will remain a key member in some of Manchester City’s all time most successful teams.
