Kyogo sat out yesterday’s League Cup win over Hibs at Celtic Park with Daizen Maeda standing in brilliantly. Kyogo now has a decision to make about whether to have an operation on his shoulder…

However, as Brendan Rodgers stated after the 3-1 victory, Kyogo could have played but instead was given a chance to rest his shoulder further, before speaking to his manager today.

There’s an ongoing problem with the should ‘popping out’ and causing severe discomfort but it seems to be easily (if painfully) remedied and that’s why Rodgers has been prepared to leave the decision on whether an operation is necessary to the player himself.

Yesterday the Celtic manager revealed that the injury pre-dates Kyogo signing for the club in July 2021 and pointed out that Kyogo is 29 years old and is mature enough to make the call himself.  The operation to resolve the problem would see Kyogo sidelined for four months, so would miss the Champions League campaign.

Surely the sensible thing would be to do what Cameron Carter-Vickers did and go under the knife towards the end of the season with a target return date of September, in time for the next Champions League campaign.

The other point worth noting here is that while Celtic were prepared to sign the player with the injury presumably being known, other clubs might not so any re-sale value for the player would be affected, if a transfer would be possible at all. So for the longer term, Kyogo might want to get this problem sorted once and for all, especially if he recognises that it is becoming increasing problematic.

“He’s had this issue for a long time – since long before he came to Celtic,” Brendan said. “It’s something he had in Japan and he’s managing his shoulder – and from time to time it gets a little bit irritable and sore.

“He could have surgery on it, but that probably takes him out for about four months. It’s only him that can decide that, because you can see that a lot of times he gets through games fine. But then sometimes he’ll fall, and maybe it’ll be awkward and he has an irritation.

“He’s a 29-year-old man, so he’ll understand what he wants to do. But it’s something he’s managed for a long period, much longer than he’s been at Celtic.  I decided to give him the time today. We could’ve had him back into the game, but I gave him time to miss it and rest and I’ll speak to him tomorrow.”
