Hertha Berlin booked the final spot in Germanyâs top flight for the 2022/23 season following a 2-0 win over Hamburg away on Monday (2-1 on aggregate).
Scorers: Boyata 4âČ, Plattenhardt 63âČ
Everything was still up for grabs in this relegation play-off second leg after Hamburgâs victory in Berlin last week.
However, the visitors clearly had a game plan as they entered the Volksparkstadion with survival in the top flight only on their mind.
It didnât take long for Hertha to make things level on aggregate either. Marvin Plattenhardtâs corner was met by captain Dedryck Boyata whose header blasted into the net just after three minutes of action.
As time went on the future of both clubs remained up in the air.
Hamburg controlled more possession across 90 minutes however it was a late moment of magic from Hertha which allowed them to stay up in the Bundesliga.
Plattenhardtâs free-kick from a tight angle curled perfectly into the top left corner beyond goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes which left the hosts stunned and their hearts broken.
The result means itâs the first time Hamburg lost a Bundesliga play-off match (previously won two and drew three) and also conceded more than one goal. They, therefore, extend their four-year run in the second tier.
Hertha, meanwhile, join Werder Bremen and Schalke in the top flight.
