With one year remaining on his current deal, Kevin Mbabu is allowed to leave Wolfsburg but Hertha Berlin have been priced out of a move for the right-back, according to Bild.

Hertha sporting director Fredi Bobic has been interested in the Swiss defender for some time but is unwilling to pay the €5m-€8m fee that Wolfsburg are asking. This is why Hertha Berlin instead opted for Everton’s Jonjoe Kenny.

Wolfsburg will allow Mbabu, who played 30 games in all competitions last season, to leave this summer after signing Kilian Fischer (21) from 2. Bundesliga side FC Nürnberg for a reported €1.6m, providing competition in defence.

Hertha Berlin secured their Bundesliga status under Felix Magath in the playoff against Hamburg. Former Mainz and Dynamo Moscow head coach Sandro Schwarz has since been appointed as his replacement.
