That’s it then. Eight have become four at this year’s World Cup.
A very un-England like display saw them beat Sweden with a minimum of fuss, whilst Croatia toppled the hosts after a nerve-wrenching penalty shoot-out.
They join France and Belgium in the semi-final, but who’s made it into our team of the tournament?
Why, only bloody Harry Maguire.
GK – Thibaut Courtois – Belgium: Made a stunning save to deny Neymar late on with an excellent tip over the bar and coped with a barrage of shots in the second-half.
CB – Harry Maguire – England: Arise, Sir Harry. England have found a new hero and his name’s Harry Maguire. The Leicester centre-back has been a consistent presence in the Three Lions backline and one of the players of the tournament so far.
CB – Diego Godín – Uruguay: Bowed out of the World Cup after defeat by France but has stoically defended the Uruguay goal this tournament.
CB – Yerry Mina – Colombia: Struggled at Barça last season but looks a man transformed for his country. Monstrous in the air and scored his third(!) goal of the tournament.
RM: Philippe Coutinho – Brazil: With Neymar stealing the limelight, Coutinho has quietly become Brazil’s key man at this World Cup and was excellent again against Mexico.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne – Belgium: Displaying his Premier League talents on the main stage, the midfielder swept Belgium into the semis with a stunning drive and dictated play.
CM: Kanté – France: Imagine not loving this little man. Covered every blade of grass against Argentina and kept Lionel Messi quiet almost singlehandedly.
LM: Eden Hazard – Belgium: Still has a tendency to fade in and out of games but was hugely influential in Belgium’s comeback win against Japan. The ball looks glued to him at times.
ST: Kylian Mbappé – France: A true ‘coming of age’ performance against Argentina. His two goals were finished with the aura of a seasoned professional and his pace is frightening.
ST: Romelu Lukaku – Belgium: His game is not just about goals. He struck fear into the Brazilian defence from the right-wing and made clever use of his power and directness.
ST: Harry Kane – England: No England player has ever scored more goals (6) in a single World Cup than Harry Kane and he ain’t slowing down. Such a threat but his overall play is superb.
