If Manchester City slip up this weekend and Liverpool unexpectedly win the Premier League title on the final day, captain Jordan Henderson will be forced to lift a replica trophy at Anfield.
City travel to Brighton on Sunday knowing that a victory will guarantee a second successive Premier League title.
But given Liverpool could also still end up snatching it from their rivals’ grasp at the final moment, the Premier League has decided to dispatch the real trophy to the Amex Stadium and a dummy version to Merseyside.
The replica is identical in almost every way to the real thing and is usually used on tours around the world and TV broadcasts.
The real trophy, meanwhile, has been on display at the Etihad Stadium all season and will once again be hoisted aloft by City captain Vincent Kompany on Sunday if City do the business on the south coast.
But if Liverpool do win the title, the real trophy will be delivered to Anfield next week.
There will also be a presentation stage at both stadiums on Sunday, while the Premier League has had two sets of winners’ medals made for each team. Any player who has played more than five matches is guaranteed a medal.
It promises to be an exciting finale to what has been an enthralling season, but at least the Premier League won’t have to worry about transporting the trophy by helicopter between Liverpool and Brighton.
