A thrilling finale is on its way for the Premier League fans as Joel Matip’s 67th minute headed goal against the Saints has kept Liverpool’s dreams of the title (and, in turn, a quadruple) alive.

Liverpool’s comeback victory on the South Coast has put them within touching distance of Manchester City, who drew 2-2 to West Ham United on May 15. The Citizens currently have a slender one-point lead over the Reds, and Pep Guardiola would be looking forward to securing their sixth title since 2012.

However, things are not going to be as straightforward for the Spaniard. Manchester City are scheduled to play Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa on Sunday. While the Liverpool legend never won a Premier League trophy with the Reds, he has the opportunity to win one for the Reds by making the Manchester club drop points this weekend.

Liverpool’s former player Philipe Coutinho could also act as a helping hand.

Here are the four cases that can take place on the final day of the 2021/22 season.

Case 1: Manchester City and Liverpool both win

A victory for Guardiola’s men would take them to 93(90) points in 38 matches, while Liverpool would only reach 92(89) points. Needless to say, the former would be crowned champions in this case.

Case 2: Manchester City win and Liverpool draw

Liverpool would accumulate 90 (89) points compared to City’s 93. A thing of joy for the Citizens.

Case 3: Liverpool win and Manchester City draw

This situation would see Liverpool clinch their 20th Premier League title. Liverpool would reach a tally of 92 points while City will have 91(90).

Case 4: Liverpool Draw and Manchester City lose

This scenario is a particularly interesting case as both the teams will finish the season on 90 points. However, a goal difference of six means that Manchester City will have to lose by at least six goals for Liverpool to be crowned as the champions – an improbable scenario given that Pep Guardiola’s biggest defeat in England has been by a margin of four goals (Everton 4-0 Manchester City, 2017).

Conclusion

It goes without saying that picking up a win at all costs against Wolverhampton Wanderers is Liverpool’s best bet on winning a domestic treble by the end of this weekend. Despite that, their chances are quite less, but we have seen stranger things happen in football.
