Manchester United have reached a verbal agreement with Wolves over the signing of Matheus Cunha.
Ruben Amorim is closing in on his first signing of the summer transfer window with Cunha set to move to Manchester in a £62.5m deal.
United have reached a verbal agreement with all parties over the transfer, with Cunha keen to join the project at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have informed Wolves of their intention to meet Cunha’s release clause, which can be paid in installments.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Cunha will sign a five-year contract, with the option of a further season. The deal is expected to be completed in the coming days, following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.
Cunha’s arrival will boost a Manchester United side reeling from their lowest league finish since being relegated in 1974.
The Brazil international impressed in a Wolves side that battled against relegation for much of the campaign, scoring 15 times and providing six assists. His 15 goals equalled the Premier League single-season record for a Brazilian player.
Furthermore, Cunha had the highest xG overperformance in the Premier League, while ranking among the division’s top players for shots on target per 90 (3rd), successful take-ons (9th) and fouls drawn (2nd).
His proven pedigree in the Premier League and experience operating in a similar system at Wolves add to his appeal. Manchester United scored just 44 goals in the Premier League this season. Only Everton (42) managed fewer among the sides to survive relegation.
