Borsussia Dortmund’s CEO Michael Zorc made some comments which suggested that Jadon Sancho will stay in Germany itself. Zorc didn’t deny if they had talks or not but said that the contract in until 2023 and Sancho will join the pre-season in Dortmund jersey.

However, Fabrizio Romano and other journalists thinks he is playing poker and lying about the whole situation. This is a dirty trick used by Dortmund to get what they want.

Here is why Dortmund will have to sell Sancho

History beckons

Dortmund have always been a selling club. In 2017, Zorc made similar comments about Ousmane Dembele that the French winger was going to stay but sold him to Barcelona for a record fee of around €105m. This could be yet another strategy by Dortmund to bring United to their terms.

Cashflow crunch

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Dormund are expected to suffer €45m in losses. Dormund’s remaining four home games made them miss out on €15m in matchday revenue. The pre-season will also take take place in deserted stadiums which means more losses in this financial year.

They sold players worth €222m since the start of the 2018-19 season. They are finally debt free and posted a net profit of around €17m in 2019. Their extension of jersey deal with Puma earned them €250m which they will receive in installments until the end of 2027-28. This suggests they had strong financials.

But, last season, they were on a spending spree. They bought Mats Hummels, Thorgan Hazard, Julian Brandt, Nico Schulz and Emre Can and Erling Haaland last season. These acquisitions put a load on their balance sheet and wage bill. With all the money earned in selling players, they have exhausted all of it and are not making any money.

Achraf Hakimi has left the club and they need to sign another right-back going into the season. Dortmund also bought Jude Bellingham for an initial fee around €25m making him the expensive 17-year-old player. With more players to buy and no money left, they have no other option but to sell.

They don’t need Sancho

Yes, it is true. Post lockdown, Sancho has only started four out of 11 games for Dortmund. USMNT youngster Giovanni Reyna is causing a whirlwind and could replace Sancho easily. Additionally, they have other options to choose from in Marco Reus and Thorgan Hazard.

Conclusion

All in all, Dormund do not need Sancho, They need the money. United are willing to give them money and need Sancho. Zorc is just capitalising on United’s needs and playing games. Eventually, this transfer will take time but is bound to happen.
