Just a few weeks ago, Heracles fans would have felt confident of avoiding being dragged into the battle to avoid finishing third from bottom in the Eredivisie. After a 5-0 win over AZ Alkmaar and a 2-1 away win over Sparta Rotterdam, they looked set for a quiet end to the season. However, a month later and they are now looking very nervously over their shoulder.
In that time, they have inherited the title of the second worst defence in the Eredivisie. They have shipped 12 goals in their last three games, grabbing only one at the other end. On the 5th of May they lost 5-0 to third bottom RKC Waalwijk. This moved Excelsior into the bottom three. Heracles then played the latter, with a win guaranteeing survival. Instead, they lost 4-0.
Heracles face Fortuna Sittard on the last game of the season needing just a point to guarantee their safety. Waalwijk and Excelsior are three points behind them with a vastly better goal difference. They may well be saved by the nature of their rivals opponents. Waalwijk face PSV while Excelsior face Feyenoord.
Heracles should have just about enough to retain their Eredivisie position this season. However, they will have certainly made their fans sweat these past few weeks with their poor defensive displays.
