Henry Martín has revealed the reason why he is one of the very few professional footballers to wear a mouth guard during games.
Explaining the situation to Mexican outlet RÉCORD, the América attacker said he made the decision based on advice from his dentist.
“I do use it for protection. There have been cases where players break teeth and gums in collisions, but mainly because I bite a lot in games.
“I clench my teeth and at the end of games my jaw hurt a lot, and, when I went to the dentist, he suggested using it.”
The 27-year-old admitted that he had trouble adapting to the covering, but added that he has few issues with it now.
“He [the dentist] told me that at the beginning it was going to be very uncomfortable because it is very big,” the Mexico international said.
“I started using it at training and at first it made me want to vomit.
“I would take it off for a while and, when I controlled it, I would put it back on and after a while I adapted.”
The only problem with the implement now would appear to be a comestic one.
“I am going to send to make a new design because in more photos it seems that I am chimuelo [toothless],” added Martín.
The Mérida native joined Las Águilas from Tijuana in 2018.
