Henrikh Mkhitaryan may be persona non grata for some at Borussia Dortmund, but the club still has a special place in the player’s heart.
Speaking to Sport1 about his time at BVB between 2013 and 2016, the now 32-year-old says he was convinced to join by the prospect of playing in front of their world famous fanbase.
“The south stand was also decisive for me. In 2012, I played with [Shakhtar] Donetsk in the Champions League in Dortmund. I was totally hooked after this game and immediately said to (his agent) Mino Raiola: ‘I want to play here one day!’
“It is a dream for every player to play in Dortmund. The Yellow Wall is crazy. I enjoyed it week after week.”
However his relationship with Dortmund was undeniably affected by the circumstances surrounding his big-money transfer to Manchester United.
Many felt the Armenia international’s decision was purely motivated by financial gain, but he insists that he was fulfulling an ambition and moved with the blessing of the Dortmund hierarchy.
“A lot of nonsense was said during this time. The decision was made by me and the club together,” the Roma winger insists.
Explaining his reasons for leaving, Mkhitaryan said: “When I heard that Manchester United was interested in me, I wanted to go there. It was my big dream to play in England one day.”
His time in the Premier League did not work out as planned, and he may always wonder how his career would have panned out had he opted to stay with the German giants.
