Jordan Henderson’s career at Liverpool is undeniably etched into the club’s rich history. The midfield maestro, who joined the Reds in 2011, displayed an unwavering commitment and passion throughout his 12-year tenure. Whatever opinions one may hold, no one can deny that Henderson always gave 100% whenever he stepped onto the pitch. His leadership and resilience played a crucial role in Liverpool’s success during some of the most remarkable years in the club’s modern history.
Henderson’s arrival from Sunderland was not without its challenges. However, over time, he silenced critics and evolved into one of the most influential figures in Liverpool’s history. By the time he left the club in 2023, Henderson had made 492 appearances for the Reds, captaining the team to some of its most significant triumphs.
Under his captaincy, Liverpool reached a golden era, securing honours such as the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Club World Cup. His determination and work ethic inspired those around him, solidifying his legacy as one of the club’s greatest leaders. As he departed Liverpool in the summer of 2023, Henderson left behind a legacy that few will ever forget.
Reflecting on his departure, Henderson acknowledged that parting ways with the club was emotionally challenging but ultimately the right decision for both himself and Liverpool. He expressed admiration for how the team has continued to flourish, with Virgil van Dijk stepping into the captain’s role and Trent Alexander-Arnold as vice-captain. It’s clear that the Liverpool faithful hold Henderson in high regard, with his return to the club being met with warmth and respect.
Following his departure from Liverpool, Henderson embarked on a new chapter with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. Despite initial enthusiasm about linking up with former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, Henderson’s time in Saudi Arabia was short-lived. After just six months, his contract was mutually terminated, leading to a January 2024 move to Dutch giants Ajax.
His switch to Ajax signalled a return to a more familiar European environment. Despite a rocky start at the club, where Ajax found themselves 11 points adrift of PSV, Henderson’s leadership has been welcomed. As the captain of Ajax, he has embraced his role, leading by example both on and off the pitch.
Ajax’s Europa League campaign has shown early promise, with the club sitting in a strong position after earning four points from their first two games. As Henderson continues to adjust to life in Amsterdam, his presence and experience will be key as Ajax seek to climb up the Eredivisie table.
Recently, Henderson made headlines when he reunited with his former Liverpool teammates during a visit to the AXA Training Centre in Kirkby. The 34-year-old, who missed Ajax’s Europa League clash against Slavia Prague due to a groin injury, was spotted catching up with familiar faces, including Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. It’s clear that the bond between Henderson and his former colleagues remains strong, despite his departure from the club.
This was not Henderson’s first visit to the training ground since leaving Liverpool. Back in April, he participated in a one-on-one fitness session at Kirkby. Speaking about his decision to leave the club, Henderson reflected on the emotional process, acknowledging that while it was a difficult choice, it was ultimately the right one for everyone involved.
Looking ahead, Henderson is determined to make his mark at Ajax, just as he did at Liverpool. His time in Amsterdam may have had a turbulent start, but with his proven leadership qualities and vast experience, it’s likely that he will help guide Ajax through this challenging period. As Henderson himself stated, “It was the best thing for the club and the team,” speaking of his departure from Liverpool, which paved the way for the next generation of leaders to step up.
Henderson’s story is far from over, and as he continues his career with Ajax, fans of both Liverpool and the wider football world will no doubt be watching with great interest.
