‘Held talks’: INEOS take first steps in pursuit of £50m Premier League target after sealing Cunha deal

After finally reaching a full agreeemnt to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wandeers, Manchester United have turned their attention to other Premier League targets.

A running theme for INEOS heading into the window is that they’re seemingly targeting players who’ve proven themselves in the English top flight, which certainly bodes better than taking a punt on lesser-known players from abroad, such as Rasmus Hojlund.

Alongside Cunha are Liam Delap and Bryan Mbeumo, the latter of which the club have now ‘held talks’ (as per Ben Jacobs) over as they look to prise the prolific goalscorer from the Gtech Community Stadium.

Mbeumo, 25, has enjoyed a career-best campaign in 2024/2025, with his contribution on the final day against Wolves ensuring he broke the 20-goal barrier. He also contributed eight assists in 38 appearances.

Alas, there’s no doubt that Thomas Frank would do anything to keep hold of such a dependable attacker for the coming seasons, but he has conceded that the player himself will likely opt for a move elsewhere after six years at Brentford.

The head coach recently told Sky Sports: If the price is right – and that’s going to be expensive – and is coming, then I’m sure the club will be open to it. I’ve said many times: we are a selling club. But at the same time, we have to reinforce that there are 10 clubs in the world that aren’t selling clubs.”

As a result, the Bees have set a £50 million price tag for Mbeumo, meaning they stand to make a £44.2m profit on the £5.8m they paid for him back in 2019.

Cunha is set to cost United £62.5m through his release clause, although it will be paid to Wolves in instalments, while Delap’s contract also has a buyout clause of £30m, which would’ve been £40m had Ipswich Town retained their Premier League status.
