After a promising start to the season, FC Heidenheim are in the midst of a crisis, having lost their last seven games in all competitions.
Frank Schmidt's men are 16th in the Bundesliga table and were last beaten 1-3 by VfB Stuttgart at the weekend.
Meanwhile, after winning their first three UEFA Europa Conference League games of the season, they've now lost two in a row in Europe, leaving them 15th with nine points.
A win would therefore be a welcome boost for Heidenheim, both to rebuild their confidence and to keep their chances of finishing in the top eight and qualifying directly for the round of 16 in March alive.
Despite their struggles, the Bundesliga outfit will be favorites going into Thursday's game against a St. Gallen side, who have just four points in the Conference League and sit eighth in the Swiss league.
The away side, however, will be buoyed by their 2-0 win over FC Zurich at the weekend, which ended a six-game winless streak.
