Heerenveen have completed the signing of Charlie Webster. The 19-year-old midfielder has joined the club on a season-long loan from Chelsea. The England youth international can play as an attacking, defensive or central midfielder. Last season, Webster played 26 times for Chelsea’s U21s. He scored six goals and provided two assists.
Heerenveen could be stripped of several players this summer. Attacking midfielder Rami Al-Hajj has left the Eredivisie side and Tibor Halilovic may also be allowed to leave. There’s a high chance that 28-year-old defensive midfielder Thom Haye might leave in the summer. Haye has attracted interest from Sunderland and Toulouse.
Heerenveen finished the Eredivisie campaign in eighth place. To push up the table next season, they’ll need to recruit players who are capable of consistently creating chances, whilst also being able to cope in defensive situations. Charlie Webster ticks those boxes and his loan move is finally complete. The transfer will help Heerenveen whilst also contributing to Webster’s development.
