Tottenham Hotspur told they could have edge over Man United in Jan Oblak transfer race

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has claimed that David de Gea’s presence at Manchester United could give Tottenham Hotspur an edge in the race to sign Jan Oblak from Atletico Madrid.

As per the Evening Standard, Spurs have shown interest in signing the 29-year-old Slovenia international as a potential replacement for Hugo Lloris.

Now, Hutton believes that Spurs, who could face competition from Man United for Oblak, could have an edge over the Red Devils in this particular transfer battle. He said:

The France international was poor in Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday. The Frenchman was specifically at fault for Gabriel Jesus’ goal to make the scoreline 2-1.

The Spurs goalkeeper fumbled Bukayo Saka’s tame shot right into the Brazil international’s path, with Cristian Romero unable to react in time. Sky Sports journalist Adam Bate later shared a Tweet with a stat that shows he has made more errors leading to goals against big teams (11) than the rest of the teams combined (10) in his PL career.

Does that show Lloris gets pressured easily in big games? That can’t be said for sure as the statistic doesn’t have a comparison with Lloris’ contemporaries. It’s not to say Lloris is not good but in Oblak, we could have a world-class replacement for the former Olympique Lyonnais man.

The Frenchman’s contract expires in the summer of 2024 while Oblak’s deal still has six years to run. The former has been a great servant to the club but all good things come to an end.

As for Hutton’s point about Oblak potentially preferring Tottenham over Spurs, there is an argument that can be made against that. De Gea, after all, is on a contract (Transfermarkt) that expires one year before Lloris’.
