Cristiano Ronaldo’s harsh words about the French top flight are not sitting well with a former world champion who spent plenty of time in Ligue 1.
Adil Rami played for three different clubs in Ligue 1 throughout his career, most recently with ESTAC Troyes in 2022-23.
The Bastia-born defender said on his Twitch account that “Ligue 1 is one of the strongest in the world; there is no debating this.”
He says he has plenty of respect for Ronaldo but adds that he is misleading people by declaring that the Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1.
If Ronaldo had played in France for the last two years, he would “get eaten alive”, according to Rami.
This war of words started last week at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai when Al Nassr’s star striker said there is only Paris Saint-Germain in France, and “the rest are finished.”
In response, the man who was a part of the French World Cup triumph in 2018 challenged the Portuguese striker to try playing against the likes of AS Monaco, Lille OSC, Olympique de Marseille and Stade Brestois.
During his playing career, Rami helped Lille win the league and Coupe de France in 2010-11, and he was named to the Ligue 1 Team of the Season on that occasion.
He also helped Marseille make the Europa League final in 2017-18 and was named to the Squad of the Season at that tournament.
The man who began his footballing career for Fréjus in Championnat National 2 said that France are the “biggest breeding group of talent in the world alongside Brazil.”
Three of the four Ligue 1 sides currently competing in the UEFA Champions League are in line to make the knockout phase, with only PSG outside the top 24.
