Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger would be a “fantastic” signing for Tottenham, according to Frank McAvennie.

The former West Ham and Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that Spurs manager Jose Mourinho is “building a great squad” in north London.

The Germany international has fallen fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Thiago Silva this summer.

McAvennie is adamant that the Germany international is still a quality centre-half.

“He is German and the German defenders are not bat at all,” he told Football Insider.

“I think it is the system that Frank plays perhaps did not suit him but he has been caught out a bit at Chelsea. But the boy is a fantastic defender and could be for Spurs.

“Mourinho is building a great squad there. I think they will be there or thereabouts and possibly challenging the top teams when Gareth Bale comes back from injury. The chances he will create for Harry Kane will be exceptional.”

Football Insider revealed earlier this week that the London club are working to sign a marquee striker to provide backup for Kane with Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke emerging as a shock target.

Mourinho has already strengthened his squad this summer with the additions of Bale, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon, Joe Hart and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
