Sheffield United have recently been credited with interest in signing Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott, according to The Sun (25th July, page 62).

Elliott caught the eye with some strong performances out on loan with Blackburn Rovers last season, as they finished 15th in the Championship table.

The winger chipped in with seven goals and 12 assists in all competitions for the Lancashire-based side last term, and it appears as though that hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Sheffield United rumoured to be interested in a deal to sign the 18-year-old.

Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, former Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny reacted to the news of the Blades’ interest in signing Elliott this summer, and felt as though it would be a ‘massive signing’ for his former club.

“I think he’d be a big success. He’s an unbelievable talent and he played nearly every game last season on loan. He’s only just turned 18 so to get someone like that in would be a great capture. He’s young, full of energy and wanting to impress.

“It would be a massive signing. The manager’s got links to him with him from Fulham. They know each other well.

“But he’s still learning and Sheffield United could be a perfect place for him to be at this stage in his career.

“It’s a great club to go and learn from because there has been some amazing young players come through in recent years. It’s good for his career and his progression.”

Sheffield United are set to take on Birmingham City in their opening match of the 2021/22 season, in what could potentially be a tricky test for the Blades at Bramall Lane.

The Verdict:

It’s hard not to agree with Kenny here, as Elliott would be a real coup for any Championship team this summer.

The Liverpool youngster has already shown that he’s more than capable of performing to a high standard at this level, having chipped in with seven goals and 12 assists for Blackburn Rovers last term.

You would have thought that the Reds would be looking at sending him out on loan to another Premier League club in the near future, but Sheffield United will be doing all they can to land his signature instead.

So it would be a real statement of intent by Slavisa Jokanovic’s side if they were to secure an agreement to sign Elliott in the near future.
