Frank McAvennie insisted that he would rather see West Ham sign Joe Rodon from Swansea than a centre-half from a European club.

The Irons legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, fears that if David Moyes signs a defender whose native tongue is not English he will struggle to communicate with the back four.

This site revealed on Monday that the London club were bidding £15million for Swansea City centre-back Joe Rodon having failed in their attempts to lure James Tarkowski from Burnley.

Football Insider also revealed earlier today that the Hammers have tabled a £20million-plus offer for Napoli defender Nikola Maksimovic with both clubs confident a deal can be agreed before the deadline.

The Serbia international, who made 28 appearances for the Serie A giants last season, has just one year left on his contract at the San Paolo Stadium.

When asked by Football Insider who he would prefer to see at the London Stadium this summer, McAvennie said:

“They made it known that they wanted the player at Burnley and they need to bring someone in.

“Sometimes you can sign great players from the Championship, you only have to look at Bowen.

“Listen, if you are standout in the Championship then you are not a bad player. It is hectic down there, especially if you are a centre-half because there is always a few decent strikers in the division. Anyone of that grade would suit me.

“I would prefer the club sign Rodon than a foreign player because I was always brought up on communication and defenders need to talk to each other. I wonder how foreign players coming to England communicate with each other.”
