Hearts’ top 10 most expensive signings – What are they up to now?

Hearts are likely to be preparing for life back in the SPFL this summer as they’re top of the Scottish Championship at the moment.

If that happens, they’ll likely be keen to splash the cash and add quality to their squad.

Hearts spent £430,000 to sign the Greek centre-back from PAOK Salonika in 2006.

Karypidis left in 2009 and retired in the summer of 2019 and has been the Head of the Football Department since.

The Scotland international spent five years at Hearts after signing from Raith Rovers for £540,000 in 1996.

He retired in 2016 and was the assistant boss of Airdrieonians up until April last year.

The French centre-forward’s spell at Hearts was the most significant of his career, making 90 appearances after joining for £540,000 in 2007.

Nadé currently plays for West of Scotland League Conference B side Annbank United, with his contract set to expire this summer.

£585,000 proved a fair fee for McPherson, given he made nearly 200 appearances for Hearts in his first spell.

The defender now works in sports management and was inducted into the Hearts hall of fame in 2018.

Ferguson proved a useful signing for Hearts, who spent £630,000 on him in 1988.

The 58-year-old retired in 1996 and as of 2017 was working in car sales.

The forward spent three years with Hearts but never really convinced, despite firing in goals in spells at HJK either side of his move to Scottish football.

The 37-year-old is still playing but became a free agent in January, having left Finnish club AC Oulu.

After impressing on loan from Lokomotiv Moscow, Hearts spent £675,000 to sign him permanently ahead of the 2007/08 season.

Kingston retired in September 2016 and is now the coach of the Right to Dream Academy U18s in Ghana.

The Chilean striker’s single-season at Hearts wasn’t hugely memorable but they did pay £810,00 to sign him from Sporting Lisbon.

Pinilla’s playing career came to an end back in February when he retired after two years at Coquimbo Unido.

The former Bosnia and Herzegovina never lived up to the billing at Hearts, despite costing a fairly sizeable fee for the time when he joined from Genk.

The 41-year-old hung up his boots at the end of the 2011/12 season.

The Scottish striker tops our list as the club splashed out £1.35 million to sign him back from Newcastle United ahead of the 1988/89 season.

The Hearts legend has become a manager after retiring as a player and is currently in his second spell at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
