Hearts Sporting Director Joe Savage has revealed that the club will be looking to sign Callum Paterson in the summer after failing to reach an agreement with Sheffield Wednesday over a deal last month.

After submitting two bids for the forward which were turned down by the Owls, the Scottish outfit made another offer on transfer deadline day which was also rejected.

Paterson’s current contract at Hillsborough is set to expire in June and thus he will become a free-agent if Wednesday do not offer him fresh terms or he opts to turn down a new deal.

The 28-year-old has been utilised on a regular basis by the Owls this season and is expected to play an influential role in the club’s push for automatic promotion in the coming months.

In the 18 league games that he has participated in, Paterson has managed to provide five direct goal contributions.

Having started for Wednesday in their FA Cup clash with Fleetwood Town last weekend, Paterson will be keen to retain his place in the side on Saturday for the club’s showdown with Plymouth Argyle.

Making reference to Hearts’ pursuit of Paterson, Savage revealed that the club will renew their interest later this year.

Speaking to BBC Sportsound (as cited by The Star), Savage said: “It’s been well documented that we’ve had an interest in Callum Paterson.

“We made another offer today [Tuesday] to get him and Sheffield Wednesday rejected it and we respect their decision.

“We’ve always said it’s about quality, not quantity.

“We wanted Callum but it never went through.

“We’ll try to get Callum in the summer but let’s be honest, Sheffield Wednesday are a massive club.

“If they get into the Championship and Callum helps them get promoted then you never know.

“We’ll have an interest but we need to wait and see on that one.”

The Verdict

Wednesday made the right decision not to part ways with Paterson last month as the former Cardiff City man offers a great deal of versatility.

As well as being able to play as a striker, Paterson can also slot in as a midfielder, a winger and as a full-back.

By producing some eye-catching performances between now and the end of the season, Paterson could earn a new deal at Hillsborough.

With Hearts set to renew their pursuit following the conclusion of the 2022/23 campaign, it will be interesting to see what the future will hold for Paterson.
