FLW’s Coventry City fan pundit has spoken about the Sky Blues’ interest in Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth this summer.
This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk‘ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Coventry City are keen to add to their squad before the end of the summer transfer window.
Frank Lampard’s outfit have made two additions so far this summer after their play-off heartache to Sunderland, recruiting Miguel Angel Brau from Granada on a free transfer, while Kaine Kesler-Hayden bolsters their backline, arriving from Aston Villa.
Now it appears that Coventry are in the market for a new shot-stopper too, with Coventry eager to make a move for Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth this summer.
As per a tweet from journalist Alex Crook, the Sky Blues are keen to swoop in for the 24-year-old given his proposed move to Ibrox collapsed, with Brighton not willing to sanction a deal with the Scottish giants.
Belgian champions Union Saint Gilloise have reportedly made an offer, while Coventry are following developments and may look to pounce for his signature.
In addition, Coventry keeper Oliver Dovin is still nursing an ACL injury that he suffered back in April, and is unlikely to play a leading role in the upcoming campaign either.
With this in mind, FLW’s Coventry City fan pundit has spoken about the emerging links to Rushworth and whether the club should look to sign the 24-year-old this summer.
Speaking to Football League World, Coventry City fan pundit Chris Deez has insisted that he would be “more than happy” to see Carl Rushworth link up at the CBS Arena, with the goalkeeping department seen as a “priority” to address.
Deez said: “I think our goalkeeping situation is absolutely the priority for the rest of this window.
“Hearing lots of noise about Rushworth from Brighton, we've got a nice little bit of history and signing players from Brighton, so yeah, I'd be quite happy with him, Swansea fans have spoken quite highly of him from a couple of seasons ago when he was their player of the season, I know he struggled to get on the pitch for Hull.
“It's a weird one because I absolutely love Ben Wilson. He was a hero for us just two-three seasons ago, won the golden glove and scored that ridiculous header that was also a handball to help us get to the play-offs. He then came in at the end of last season and really saved our season after Brad Collins seemed determined to throw it all away.
“I'd be more than happy with Rushworth. I'm seeing conflicting reports about it being a loan and about it being permanent. We were also linked with Jack Butland, who I'd be really happy with, but I would imagine he would want assurances of being number one even once Dovin comes back.
“If Rushworth is happy to steady the ship along until Dovin comes back, that would be fantastic. I think unless Rushworth comes in and has an absolute blinder over the first five or six months, you would surely imagine that Dovin would come back, get back to fitness and then slot right back into the team because he was fantastic for us last season.”
Coventry City only have two goalkeeping options to start the season with currently, as Ben Wilson and Brad Collins prepare to battle it out for a starting spot given Oliver Dovin’s lengthy absence.
However, Wilson also had his fair share with injury troubles last term, suffering knee ligament damage that scuppered the majority of his campaign between the sticks.
The Sky Blues won’t want to see that happen again to Wilson, but if it does, then the club needs to have quality options waiting in the wings to not derail any early momentum that they create.
There also doesn’t seem to be a lot of confidence placed in Collins, so recruiting someone of Rushworth's ilk, who possesses vital Championship experience, can leave Coventry fans feeling comfortable that they have dependable shot stoppers even in the event of an injury crisis.
Rushworth has certainly showed himself to be a reliable figure from his time at Swansea City, where he played every game of the 2023-24 season, and he certainly has the capability to thrive in a promotion push.
It will be seen as a coup to pick up someone of Rushworth’s talent, who has the potential to do a stellar job until Dovin eases himself back into action.
