Cambuur manager Henk de Jong has been forced to step down due to health issues.
De Jong is something of a club legend at Cambuur having led them to the Eerste Divisie title and promotion to the top flight on two occasions as well as their highest-ever Eredivisie finish last season.
His team have made a solid start to the current campaign, sitting in 14th with two wins and two draws from their first 10 matches, but he’s now being forced to leave them.
Having spoken with his doctor, he has decided to resign to focus on recovering from health issues, but is open to returning to the club in a different role.
“For many people this news may come as a surprise, but it is a decision that you obviously think long and hard about,” he said.
“Ultimately, health is the most important thing and what I think is perhaps even more important is my commitment to the club, staff, players and supporters. We’ve done and tried everything we can, but you also have to be honest and this is the best thing for everyone given the situation.
. As the head coach of an Eredivisie club, you don’t get time to fully recover and I’m going to really take the time for that. After that, we will see what the future brings, where another role within SC Cambuur is certainly possible.”
