“He was everywhere – 9” – Rangers ratings v Motherwell

Article image:“He was everywhere – 9” – Rangers ratings v Motherwell

Rangers, slightly ridiculously, won a match of football for the first time since the middle of May, as Philippe Clement’s side overcame a dreadfully poor Motherwell at Hampden, in the first of our ‘away’ home fixtures in Mount Florida.

Ibrox Noise does our best to rate the players after a rather critical three points:

OneFootball Videos

Butland:

Barely had a save to make in this one, but would have counted his lucky stars Lennon Miller’s aim was off early on. A non-descript display really. 6

Tavernier:

Say what you like about the captain, and believe us we have, but his contribution in attack remains so important even if his defending is dire. Completely let the cross through that ended up in the back of Rangers’ net, but assisted Cerny for the eventual winner. Defensively lacking focus, but overall his contribution was lively. 7

Souttar:

He’s not having the best start to the season at all – just a couple of clearances, and was lost for the errant cross which led to the goal. Concentration needs to improve because we know he’s better than he’s started the season as. 5

Propper:

Immensely unlucky with the OG, but showed composure on both feet and passing was outstanding. Won more in the air than anyone else, and had a solid debut for sure. 7

Ridvan:

Quiet match – offered his usual overlapping and got some crosses in but defensively didn’t do a lot – much like Tav on the other side. Competent. 6

Barron:

Very quickly becoming a complete Rangers superstar, his passing was literally stunning. 60 passes, 98% accuracy. Isn’t offering a lot going forward, but his defensive work is exceptional. He was everywhere. We can see why Aberdeen fans are so resentful. 9

Diomande:

Technically an assist for Dessers’ opener, he was a bit more in this one than v Kyiv, but in his position we feel like 52 touches isn’t really enough. Needs to dictate more and have a bigger influence. It’s time for this lad to step properly up. 6

Lawrence:

Just wasn’t in this one at all, no surprise he was hauled off at 55 minutes. 5

Wright:

Fans were in rage at his name on the team sheet, but he had the last laugh – he had a fairly good performance, worked hard, and actually got in some excellent positions. Was very unlucky not to score twice. 7

Cerny:

Exceptional. We won’t go mental and call the boy world class, but he showed why he’s worth around £10M. Some deft touches and passes, a few beautiful threaded balls and of course ‘that’ goal. We’d do brilliantly to make this signing permanent. A proper Rangers level winger for that side of the pitch. 9

Dessers:

Just keeps annoying his detractors by continuing to score. His all-round game is not a polished sumptuous banquet, but he’s already scored more this season than Lawrence Shankland and soon-to-be-ex Aberdeen man Bojan Miovski. 7

Subs:

Sterling:

Joined the match as Clement decided to remove a lot of creativity and the thing became a slugfest, but the ex-Chelsea man is happy back in midfield and looks comfortable again. 6

McCausland:

A lack of influence – got the ball a lot but didn’t do a thing of note with it. 5

Balogun:

Did what the big man does – solidified defence. 7

Matondo:

Got the ball 11 times but only made a single pass. Tried to cause a bit of trouble. 5

Dowell:

We have no idea why Clement keeps bringing this guy on with 10 minutes to go. 3 touches, 2 passes. Outstanding (!) 4

Manager:

Philippe Clement is starting to slowly eke something of an XI together. This was a solid first 45, but for some reason he changed a tonne of things in the second half and ruined all momentum. A bad habit Clement has is hijacking things which work. But he will be happy all three of his new signings who started shone. They are all justifying the scouting system more and more. But end of the day, the man got the needed three points even if some of his method was madness. 7
