Hull City completed the signing of free agent Tobias Figueiredo on Tuesday, with the centre back arriving at the MKM Stadium on a two-year contract.

Figueiredo played an important role as a rotational first team player as Nottingham Forest sealed promotion from the Championship in 2021/22.

The 28-year-old made 121 appearances for the Reds and thrived at the heart of Steve Cooper’s back three system.

The Tigers will be hoping to build on their transitional season into the second tier last term, and Figueiredo joining will go some way to shoring up Shota Arveladze’s backline.

We gathered the thoughts of a selection of FLW writers to see if they believe the 28-year-old is a smart addition and whether he will be a regular starter for the Tigers…

Acun Ilicali’s takeover has given Hull the scope to cast their net wider than in previous seasons, something that has seemingly played its part in their signing of Tobias Figueiredo.

Proving to be a strong defender at Championship level, his aerial and ground dominance, combined with his excellent reading of the game will certainly bolster Hull’s defensive ranks.

Still 28 years of age, he is someone who is within, or just about approaching his ‘peak’ when regarding centre backs, whilst adding an excellent level of experience.

Seeing his game time diminish at Nottingham Forest last season as a result of the sheer quality that Steve Cooper had at his disposal, Figueiredo would have been a good addition at most Championship clubs.

Adam Jones

He wasn’t exactly one of the first names on the teamsheet at Nottingham Forest in the past season but he still has plenty of offer to the cause.

Jacob Greaves is a nailed on starter and Sean McLoughlin is likely to be one of the first names on the team-sheet, so it will be interesting to see if Alfie Jones and Figueiredo have to go head-to-head for a third spot in central defence.

Already accustomed to playing in a back three, it shouldn’t take too long for the new arrival to settle in and adapt.

This is one reason why you could easily see him starting straight away.

He may find it slightly more difficult if the Tigers operate with a flat back four though, even though his promotion-winning experience will be valuable.

This looks like a solid bit of business to me.

Tobias Figueiredo has his flaws but he’s proven Championship level and did not look out of place when he stepped in to start for Nottingham Forest last season as they secured promotion to the Premier League.

I have no doubt that Hull will splash the cash next season but that doesn’t mean that a free agent signing such as this isn’t an important move.

As for whether or not he starts, I think he’ll be a regular fixture in the XI next season.

His experience will be really useful next to the likes of Alfie Jones and Jacob Greaves while he likely won’t have moved to the Tigers to be a back-up.
