The German will be the replacement to Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed from the role last week after the end of the regular Championship season.

He guided the team to a seventh place finish in the table, coming up short of a play-off place by just three points.

Walter has no experience in English football, but has competed in the 2. Bundesliga with the likes of HSV Hamburg and Stuttgart.

Tim Walter appointment verdict

FLW’s Hull fan pundit Ant Northgraves is unsure of what to expect from the potential new manager.

However, he has claimed that it is a bold and brave decision from the owner Acun Ilicali to opt for a change in style, and that he is willing to back the move to bring in the German.

“I don’t know anything about him, to the point where I could make an accurate judgement on it, I don’t think,” Northgraves told Football League World.

“Everything I’ve heard from German football correspondents on various radio shows, and from what I’ve seen on Twitter about his tactics it certainly fits the bill in what the owner wants for what the owner wants in terms of exciting, aggressive, attacking football.

“The guy seems like he’s aggressive himself, he might get a few red cards!.

“I’m quite excited, you’ve got to back the owner.

“He’s made a bold and brave decision if it does end up being Tim Walter.

“Let’s see what he has on offer, see if he can get the best out of the players we’ve got and bring some players in with him.

“Hopefully he gives us some of the entertaining attacking football that the owner so desperately craves.”

Walter's previous managerial experience

Walter is currently available as a free agent having left Hamburg in February.

He was unable to guide the club to promotion to the Bundesliga during his near-three years with the second division side.

The 49-year-old also previously managed Stuttgart, but he lasted just seven months in the role before being dismissed in December 2019.

This will be his first foray into English football, with Hull looking to compete for promotion to the Premier League.

Walter appointment is a gamble for Hull

Rosenior had done well to bring the team out of relegation trouble and into play-off contention in just 18 months or so.

But missing out on a top six place after their January investment was clearly enough to persuade Ilicali to move on, especially due to wanting a different style of play.

Walter should bring that more aggressive, attacking style of play that the owner wants, but it may not necessarily bring the proper results.

It will be a busy summer for the Tigers, with several new additions expected, and the arrival of Walter as manager highlights Ilicali’s obvious ambition for the club.
