Portsmouth confirmed the loan signing of Norwich City striker Gassan Ahadme last week after he had netted seven times in three pre-season friendlies.

The young forward then took his tally to eight from four at the weekend – a run of games that has included two teams from the higher division.

One player whose goalscoring abilities may come as a detriment to Ellis Harrison. The Pompey forward, who could see fewer minutes on the pitch next season as a result of Ahadme’s excellent start to life at Fratton Park, has praised the young forward in an interview with The News: “He looks incredible. I watch him every day in training and see things and think: ‘He’s not 20 years old!’.

“He plays a lot of years ahead of his time.

“The competition is good – I’m over the moon. I watch Gassan, I watch John (Marquis) and they’re both at it.”

The youthful Ahadme will be battling it out with Marquis and Harrison for a starting spot in Danny Cowley’s side when the season commences on August 7.

The verdict

Ahadme is certainly enjoying his time in Hampshire and he is providing Portsmouth fans with even more hope that promotion could be secured this year.

It is a highly competitive division this year, but if Ahadme continues to show this level of expertise in front of goal, then it could be a season to remember.

Not only does Ahadme’s form benefit himself, but it increases the competition for places in the forward areas for Pompey.

Harrison will have to work hard to be involved in Cowley’s set up this season, but there will always be chances for him to impress.
