Antonio Conte is keen on the Manchester United job as pressure builds on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

According to The Mirror, Duncan Castles has revealed that former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte is interested in taking over the reins at Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently under the scanner following a mixed run of results. While the comeback win over Atalanta brought back optimism, it remains to be seen if it is merely a stay of execution.

The Norwegian will need to ensure that such performances are the norm rather than an exception. One of the names touted as a replacement should he fail is that of Conte.

“I’m told, is that he is interested in the Manchester United job but not without restrictions.”

The Italian led Inter Milan to the Scudetto last season, their first in a decade. He quit the San Siro earlier in the summer and is now unattached.

Conte also has prior experience of coaching in England during his brief spell at Chelsea. He went on to lead the Blues to the Premier League title in his very first campaign.

While Castles expresses Conte’s interest, it is not without strings attached. The 52-year-old is keen to win the Champions League and is seeking a club that can help him achieve that. United certainly have the resources and appeal to the Italian.

“He has to win the Champions League, so Manchester United are interesting because of the squad they’ve got, because of their status and because of the resource that is behind them.”

Despite much success domestically, Conte has lacked one trophy in his arsenal- a continental one. Winning the Champions League will potentially see him join the list of all-time greats of the game. At the very least, it will make a case for him to be counted among them.

Whether that will happen at United remains to be seen.

United take on Liverpool in the standout Premier League fixture this Sunday. A victory on the night will certainly boost Solskjaer’s chances of keeping his job. The Norwegian is yet to bear Jurgen Klopp in the league.
