Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has been talking about Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling.
Liverpool sold Sterling to Manchester City for a transfer fee of €63.70 million back in 2015.
Neville believes that since joining Manchester City and working under Pep Guardiola, Sterling has become a “fantastic player”.
Neville said the following about Sterling on Sky Sports Football (6:37pm, October 17, 2020): “It’s incredible, Martin. You talked about before when he was at Liverpool.
“It wasn’t a foregone conclusion that he was going to come to City. People of Liverpool would have said, ‘I am not sure that he is going to become world class, certainly not do what he is doing’.
“But under the instruction and guidance of Pep Guardiola, he has turned into a fantastic player.”
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
We won’t disagree with Neville. Sterling has turned into a superb player.
Sterling has scored 104 goals and registered 77 assists in 249 appearances for the Sky Blues.
However, Neville did suggest that Liverpool supporters believed that Sterling would not become a top player in his aforementioned comments.
For us, that is not the case. We always believed that Sterling would develop into a very good player.
In 129 appearances for Liverpool, Sterling found the back of the net 23 times and created 25 goals. He certainly showed plenty of potential at Liverpool, and the aforementioned statistics back that particular argument up.
As a result of Sterling’s potential, we were aware that he could become a good player.
However, despite the fact that Sterling could play football, we were not sad to see him go. He handed in a transfer request.
We don’t want players at the club who do not want to be there.
