Peter Crouch has said that there should be a "general consensus" that Mohamed Salah has been the best player in the Premier League this season.

Speaking to the Mail after the 2021-22 top-flight campaign concluded, as cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the former Red said that Salah "has" to be the Premier League Player of the Year.

"It's got to be Mohamed Salah, that has to be the general consensus," Crouch said. "The sheer volume of goals (23) and assists (14) and that relentlessness to be at his maximum.

"Looking at Liverpool, I absolutely love Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk's the best around at centre-half, but Salah brings that extra edge to them every week. To contribute those numbers as the talisman of that team means he has to win Player of the Year."

Anfield Watch Verdict

After Kevin De Bruyne won the EA Sports Player of the Season, it raised a lot of eyebrows, to say the least.

Salah has the most goals and assists in the Premier League this season and despite a shaky end to the campaign, it's hard to disagree with Crouch's assessment.

When Salah was firing in goals at the beginning of the season, De Bruyne wasn't having the best times.

Yes, the Belgian had an upturn in form towards the end of the campaign, but if you're giving the benefit of the doubt to him, then you have to give it to Salah.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to recency bias for a lot of these awards. Salah was the best player and his goals and assists prove that.

Hopefully the Egyptian can win the PFA Player of the Year, as that is a highly regarded award.
