Chelsea are closing in on Kieran McKenna, with the Ipswich boss their clear number one target to replace Mauricio Pochettino in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

There’s tons of chatter about what he might or might not bring to the job, and whether or not he’s an upgrade on Pochettino, who was finally starting to get settled in and form a solid team at Stamford Bridge.

On Twitter, Chelsea have have been digging back into this season to check out some of the praise that McKenna got from players he was in charge of.

“From day one when I walked in the door he [McKenna] told me he’d help me to improve my game, and he has done massively, going forward and defensively,” impressive left back Leif Davis said to Sky Sports.

“I didn’t think I had that quality in the final third, it definitely wasn’t my strongest point, but now I’d say it is. The way he has worked with me in training to be more comfortable with the ball at my feet in the final third, and to find passes instead of just getting it into the box and hoping for the best.”

Well that all sounds very promising. What about our own loanee, Omari Hutchinson?

“Sometimes when you come into the team as a sub the manager tells you we need a different dynamic. A skillful player that’s going to get at your man and who can go both ways. For me personally I enjoy that. I like to entertain the crowd, and the manager gives you that freedom.”

Again, it sounds great.

An incredible impact – but not at the top level

Of course as many have pointed out, this is Championship praise from Championship players. Whether or not it applies to the next level isn’t yet known. It’s certainly a while since there was a coach this promising and highly rated at that level, but there are certainly shades of Graham Potter in this appointment – although, of course, he already had years of Premier League experience by the time we went for him.
