Danny Mills has launched a staunch defence of Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce after their 4-1 defeat to Manchester United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Manchester City and England full-back delivered his verdict after Bruce faced fresh criticism from Newcastle fans.

After the game #bruceout was trending on Twitter with supporters lamenting their collapse at the end of the game which saw them concede three times in the final 10 minutes.

Bruce has been under constant criticism since replacing the popular Rafa Benitez at the beginning of last season.

The 59-year-old said after the defeat to United: “It is work in progress for us. We have tried to change and with that it will take time. The defeat looks worse than it really was.”

And now Mills has now come to the defence of Bruce.

He told Football Insider: “Let’s give Steve Bruce a bit of credit, he takes a lot of criticism Steve Bruce for things that aren’t always in his control.

“I think he’s done a magnificent job, I think he’s been superb in what he’s done.

“We need to give Steve Bruce a good round of applause for everything that he has to deal with at Newcastle.

“The way that he’s conducted himself with dignity and professionalism through all of this has been absolutely superb.”

Bruce has won 18 of the 53 games that he has been in charge of Newcastle for, a win rate of 34%.

This season they have won two of their first five games and have progressed to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
